American Betty Mahmoody is married to Moody, an Iranian. When they go on a holiday in Iran to visit Moody's family, he tells Betty he's decided to stay there. If she wants to leave, she must leave their daughter behind. If she stays, Betty must live in a culture vastly different and, she believes, very dangerous.
