In the beginning of the 20th century, the Cleary family is brought from New Zealand to Australia to run their aunt Mary Carson's ranch. Their youngest daughter Meggie grows up being looked after by the Roman Catholic family priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart. Over the years both realise that their feelings for each other have grown as well. Ralph is torn between his vows and his love for Meggie.
